Sandline Discovery - Insight, Ideas and eDiscovery

Practically everyone who works in lit support has had to use Robocopy or advise someone on how to use it. It helps to create a personal Robocopy cheat sheet including the switches needed to safely copy files that need to be processed for review. Here is mine:

robocopy [source] [destination] /b /dcopy:T /xj /tee /fp /r:0 /e /np /v /log+:[logfile]

Beware the /xj option may skip files, but is sometimes necessary to avoid infinite symlink loops. That's another article...

Here is the breakdown of what you are constructing:

[source]

Source Directory (drive:\path or \\server\share\path)

[destination]

Destination Directory (drive:\path or \\server\share\path)

/B

Copy files in Backup mode

/DCOPY:T

COPY Directory Timestamps

/XJ

eXclude Junction points. (normally included by default)

/TEE

Output to console window, as well as the log file

/FP

Include Full Pathname of files in the output

/R:n

Number of Retries on failed copies: default 1 million

/E

Copy subdirectories, including Empty ones

/NP

No Progress - don't display percentage copied

/V

Produce Verbose output, showing skipped files

/LOG+:[file]

Output status to LOG file (append to existing log)

We also plan to share another Quick Tip on transferring data with Virtual Disks that may be worth a bookmark as well!
